Ministerial arrogance

Those invited to the launch of this year’s Melbourne International festival of the Arts on Tuesday night were instructed that the function began at 6.30pm SHARP.  And they dutifully obeyed - and were in their seats on time.  They then waited, and waited, and waited - and were advised that “we are awaiting the arrival of the Minister”.  Said Minister (Lynne Kosky) eventiually arrived at 6.50 and made no apology whatsoever to the assembled throng. Ah, such arrogance.  Such disregard for us ordinary people - and true supporters of the arts.  And, also, so typical of the increasing distancing of this do-nothing government from the misguided people who gave them the  power they so frequently abuse.

She didn’t do much for me when she was Minister of Education, and she kept people waiting then too.

Much as it irks me to say it I think it was a shame that Bracks & Co were returned at the last election. They’re well past their use by. Mr.Brumby in particular needs shifting, he sits in his safe seat with arrogance, as of much use as tits on a bull to his electorate.

I too resent the arrogance of Government Ministers, as I do Councillors elected to represent me in Local Government. Elected people need to be reminded, that they are in their jobs by the good graces of the voters.

We pay them to be there! Did Kosky get docked out of her pay as we would have running late for work in these days of Work Choices….Has she signed an individual workplace agreement?

Like any employee, elected ones, should have the good graces to listen to their employers, the people of Victoria. Where do they get off thinking that their time (although much more expensive) is actually more valuable than ours?.

Was it worth the wait? Was she necessary to the entertainment value anyhow?

Again, the message there was ‘Your time is not worth anything to me’. Perhaps your vote should be directed into another direction too.

She’s still doing it. Today, all the other VIPs were gathered at Flinders Street station at the appointed time for the 11.15am launch of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. But Minister Kosky strolled in at 11.25, unconcerned and unapologetic. Seems she is following the practice of the trains and trams which come under her other portfolio as Transport Minister and rarely arriving on time.

I resent political arrogance as much as the next person, but do you think you might be a little harsh on Kosky.

Kosky is making enough mistakes, without people pulling up trivial matter such as her being 10 or 20 minutes late. Mary Delahunty had worse timing, she was two hours late to an official event my good friend organised. I’m assuming - and I could be wrong - that ministers do more than just attend launches. They have emergency meetings and emergency telephone calls. I’d rather the Kosky was late because she was handling (or handballing) a Public Transport issue than be on time to a media launch so that you guys can feel that she sees you as important VIPs. Who really is being arrogant here? Are you really saying that your needs for punctuality supercede the state’s need for Arts programs and Public Transport? When you run late it’s because you’ve slept-in, had car troubles, had to smoke that ciggie. I doubt that Kosky was late due to those reasons. Is that the arrogance of a cold, bored journalist I can smell?
Ten minutes - really! Get a life or buy a better coat!

Inhabiting a parallel universe and walking to the beat of a different drum, I observe the machinations and misdemeanours of life in this funny old Yarra village we call Melbourne.
