Emergency? Forget it
Published 1 year, 6 months ago in Where I Live.If you ever think if using that emergency after-hours phone number posted on the door of the Yarra Health Centre in Church Street, forget it. What you’ll get if you ring is a testy female asking why you’ve phoned that number and did you call a 1300 number. Emergency help? No way. She wasn’t interested in our problem - our need for medical attention.
We tried explaining it was an after-hours number, but she wasn’t having any of that - and, anyway, the doctors weren’t starting work until 11am and this was NOT the number to ring. OK, so why is it there on the door of the health service? We were ill, we needed medical help, but what we got was a bureaucrat.

There are a few things to do: you should complain bitterly about the lack of help you got from this person, and you find another General Practitioner and ask the new practice to ask the old practice for all your medical records. Then you tell your friends and if they can switch from the old practice to a new practice… sooner or later the partners will start to ask why people are leaving. Patient’s are dollars to a private practice they will fix it or lose you.
How frustrating. I remember once when my daughter had decided to have a snack on a solvol bar. The fridge magnet I had with an emergency number on it, saved on the fridge expressly for an emergency…….was wrong.
Dear Dreamer: We are not talking here about a GP but about Yarra Health Service, otherwise known as the Inner East Commubnity Health Service. Why they use the word “service” their title is hard to understand when they advertise an “emergency” telephone number which fails to provide any sort of service.
This is nothing to do with patient dollars but all about a community service upon which so many people rely.
I hope you rang them during office hours on their day number and had the Notice amended accordingly.
I’ve rung an emergency number some years ago to be told it would take 8 hours for the locum doctor to visit me in Glen Eira…He was working his way across the city from Sunshine!! Emergency Room at a Public Hospital saves both time and angst dispite the hours of waiting. Except I was too sick to drive and wasn’t terminal (yet!)
